cabin manual

Welcome to our cabin! Our stone and timber cabin is a cosy family home set in Boon Wurrung Country. We acknowledge the Boon Wurrung/Bunurong people of the Eastern Kulin Nation, traditional owners of the land and waters, and we pay our respects to elders past, present and emerging. We’re honoured to be able to share this beautiful land and hope you love it as much as we do!

Cape Schanck is located on the Mornington Peninsula, at its most southern tip. It separates the wild Bass Strait from the calmer waters of Western Port. A dramatic coastline, featuring volcanic black rocks, steep cliffs and sparkling water for miles; the air is crisp and fresh, scented with tea trees, coastal rosemary and banksia.

The land is home to many kangaroos, wallabies and other beautiful native wildlife like tiny rare birds, cheeky magpies and wattlebirds. We’ve spotted dolphins and giant stingrays at the beach; seahorse and octopus live in the reefs, and whales and orcas breed and nurse young in these waters.

Drive carefully in the mornings and evenings and keep eyes peeled for kangaroos if you go on early morning runs or rides - this is their territory and they're everywhere!

Our cabin is situated on the road to Cape Schanck lighthouse within the National Park, and on the way to many well-known National Park treks and walks.

There is no town in Cape Schanck, but you're close to the town and beaches of Flinders, the beautiful wineries and produce of Red Hill, or the larger cities of Rosebud and Dromana.

The Cabin is tucked away, making a perfect base for exploring the areas around you; a peaceful spot to come back to and rest, read, sleep and cook in a calm and cosy

environment. Our property backs onto the Cape Schanck RACV golf course, so if you’re a golf fan it’s literally down the road!

  • From Melbourne Take the M1 and Mornington Peninsula Fwy/M11 which takes 1 hr 24 min on a good day! (102.4 km)

Entry to the property is off Cape Schanck Rd via a little service lane. You can go via the blue old-school letterbox 86 on Cape Schanck Rd or if you overshoot, the next set of letterboxes, further along, connects the service lane up to our place.

The cabin is painted black and has a black galvanised iron shed to L and a boxed in timber patio, with number 86.

On your way stop at Hawkes farm gate at 661 Boneo Road, Boneo (you’ll see a huge sign) on your left as you head towards Cape Schanck) for supplies like locally grown fruit and vegetables, sourdough bread, milk, eggs, honey, jam, fresh pasta, cheese and coffee... Don’t miss it!

They serve legendary hot chips on weekends, 10 - 3 pm and serve espresso coffee 7 days!

There’s also produce picking trail rides for families on weekends and all sorts of fun stuff.

  • Our garden was an empty rectangle when we arrived. Cape Schanck blocks were once paddocks and farm fields, cleared of all vegetation when white settlers took land from traditional owners. Sadly most indigenous plants are lost, and we are working hard to introduce them back into our yard. It's not finished yet, but we are working on planting Indigenous plants which work in the tough conditions of strong coastal winds and sandy soil.

As we plant, we will update this manual with the species you see in the garden. We started with this tiny remnant of natives:

    • She oaks

    • Correa hedge

    • Coast Beard Heath

    • Bottle brush

    • Wooly bush

    • Native grass

    • Billy Buttons

    • Saltbush

    • Banksia

    • Pigs face

    • Tea Tree

    • Peppermint gum

Our garden was designed by Millie at Wild Native Gardens, and uses no irrigation, relying on rainwater only. If you think it looks thirsty, give it a water from the hose. There are quite a lot of little wrens and a family of parrots who live there, as well as multiple blue tongue lizards and a tiger snake was once seen in the front garden in summer... Cape Schanck is basically a national park so theres a lot of wildlife! Keep your shoes on, stay alert round the driveway and the screen door closed! There is a snake bite kit in the bathroom cupboard, but its unlikely you'll ever see a snake!

Plant stock from Glenvue and Ausplant nurseries, which are both worth a look!

  • Closest fuel spot before getting back onto freeway PENINSULA GAS + FUEL https://peninsulagasandfuel.com.au/ they’re not far away and have after hours pay with card service Colchester Rd Rosebud, off Browns Rd. (8 mins away)

Closest bottle shop The Corner Bottleshop 2 Boneo Rd Rosebud-(10mins away)

    http://cornerbottleshop.com/

Lighthouse is at the end of our road driving away from Boneo Rd. It's so nice and worth a trek down the wooden pathway top bottom, as well as a look at the top!

The Pines park and look outs and walks is on R before the lighthouse. Look for National Park signs. There’s short and long walks to beaches or lookouts, and a cleared, mowed picnic spot behind the pines.

Bushrangers Bay is a long but good walk-don't wear open shoes as there can be snakes and bull ants! It can take over an hour to do a return walk. Take care if you plan to swim there, as the waves and conditions can be dangerous and people have lost their lives here. Check tides, only swim in the rockpool water near the shore, as edges of rocks can be hammered by unexpected waves.

Kangaroo viewing area-go here after 6pm to see the kangaroos.

Drive up to the gate, park and walk into the mowed track down the hill and up to see kangaroos either side of the path in groups!

Blowhole on the way to Flinders is a sign for the blowhole on R. Look it up, it's really cool when the tide is in and the foam is blown around everywhere!

Flinders-check the socials for hours but we love Flinders Sourdough, but get there before 11 for the pies as they sell out! And it's not open some days, maybe Wed/Thurs.

Flinders General Store is the best spot for everything else while you're in town. It's weirdly the fanciest general store ive ever been to in the middle of nowhere.

You can get a pretty good sandwich and pie and coffee there I recommend.

Flinders Pho is open Friday Sat and Sunday lunch and dinner but only till 6pm!! and is totally cute and has vegetarian pho. It's on the lawn down the road from the general store.

Flinders pier is lovely, the kids jump off the end, and at certain times there’s mussels in broth at a little caravan... or you can buy fresh mussels/oysters in the morning from a boat at the pier. The mussels are available when the sign says so on the way down to the pier.

Mushroom reef is a lovely walk and there’s shells and nice rock pools, and you can snorkel over the reef.

Shoreham Beach is our favourite swimming beach, it's got lots of clear gentle waves and pine trees go right to the shore.

Red Hill is very close, if you prefer a woodsy nice change from the beach, and there's lots of lovely farms and cheese places etc, and sometimes pumpkins and other veg or apples for sale along the way.

Berry farms along there are more Xmas time, cherries are done, and I think strawberries might be too, but worth a look!

The Epicurean in Red Hill has nice coffee and cakes and pies and pizza if you’re feeling fancy.

Another nice cafe is the Nordie in Red Hill, it's pretty laid back and has a bottle shop right close by if you want to grab a bottle of something locally made.

Peninsula Hot Springs is 20 mins away—pre book online for 1 hour spots. Night time is the best time cos no one is looking at anyone and the fairy lights are nice.

We go shopping at Dromana IGA because it’s really good and huge and not $$

Dromana is also the place we get our coffee beans or a coffee-at Little Rebel Coffee Roasters. It's in an industrial area, where there's a cheese place, Boathouse Cheese, indoor plants place, seafood wholesaler, and close by the best bakery, Millers Bakery which is great for breakfast and lunch. Little Rebel has a map of all the cute spots around and can explain where they all are.

Dromana drive in is opposite the coffee spot.

Arthurs Seat - the chairlift is fun and lovely on a good day, and the lookouts and drive up the mountain is lovely and free! There’s a lovely park up there called SeaWinds, which is a nice spot for a picnic and walk.

Diggers Garden and nursery is up there which is nice too.

Golf courses are everywhere here-Cape Schanck RACV course is on Boneo Rd close by, our back fence line is the edge of it!
